Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Blues

Manchester City FC was founded in 1880 as St. Mark’s West Gorton. The Blues won the FA Cup in 1904 and 1934. They went on to clinch the First Division title for the first time in 1937, having already twice finished as runners-up in the league. Don Revie was a key player in Man City’s third FA Cup win in 1956. The team used tactics inspired by the Hungarian national football team, as they had terrorised England in previous fixtures. Manchester City faced Birmingham City in the final and eventually won 3-1.

Joe Mercer took over as manager in the 1960s and built on Manchester City’s success. The Blues won a second top flight title in 1968 and a fourth FA Cup trophy one year later. A League Cup victory and European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph followed in 1970 and Manchester City won a second League Cup in 1976. This would be the final major trophy for over thirty years, as the Blues’ form began to stutter and they struggled to keep up with the teams around them. In 2008, a takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group created headlines around the world. Manchester City instantly became one of the richest football teams in Europe and the club began to build a side capable of winning the Premiership.
