Brief History of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC was formed in 1877 and the club became founder members of the Football League in 1888. Wolves won two FA Cup trophies in the early years and forged a reputation as being one of the best sides in England during the run-up to the Second World War. Former captain Stan Cullis was appointed as the Wolverhampton Wanderers manager in 1948 and he led the club through an immensely successful era. Wolves won the FA Cup in 1949, three First Division titles in the 1950s and another FA Cup trophy in 1960.
The club also enjoyed a series of famous victories against foreign opposition in the floodlit friendlies of the mid-50s. One of the teams that Wolves faced was Honved of Hungary, which included many players from the Hungarian national side. Hungary had recently thrashed England and they had also been the 1954 World Cup finalists. Wolverhampton Wanderers came back from two goals down to beat Honved 3-2. The game was televised live on the BBC and the national media referred to Wolves as “Champions of the World" following the incredible win. This contributed to the launch of the European Cup.
In 1967, Wolverhampton Wanderers played in America as the ‘Los Angeles Wolves’. Twelve British football clubs had been imported in their entirety to the American soccer league; the ‘Los Angeles Wolves’ would eventually win the title. The club returned to the top of the English league in the 1970s. Wolves also reached the 1972 UEFA Cup final and they won the League Cup in 1974 and 1980. After a period of financial problems, Wolverhampton Wanderers reached the Premiership for the first time in 2003.
Did you know…
Wolverhampton Wanders FC play in a gold and black strip in homage to the club motto, “Out of Darkness Cometh Light". The club also has a series of anthems, such as “The Happy Wanderer" and “The Liquidator". A slightly modified version of “The Impossible Dream" has become a popular Wolves anthem in recent years. When the team was pushing towards promotion to the Premiership in 2009, Wolverhampton Wanderers printed over 26,000 gold and black cards, containing lyrics to the song, which were placed on stadium seats.
Wolves have played at Molineux Stadium since 1889. The name originated from Benjamin Molineux, a local merchant who bought a plot of land in 1744 upon which he built his home. Northampton Brewery purchased the land in 1889 and rented it to Wolves. Wolverhampton FC renovated the site and bought the freehold in 1923. Archibald Leitch was heavily involved in early redevelopments of the stadium and Wolves became one of the first clubs to install floodlights in 1953. The stadium currently holds over 28,000 spectators and there are plans in place to increase this capacity.
