Brief History of Southampton FC
Southampton FC was formed in 1885 by members of St. Mary’s Church of England Young Men’s Association. The club won three consecutive Southern League titles between 1897 and 1899 and three further titles in the early 1900s. The Saints joined the Third Division in 1920 and won promotion in their first season. Southampton missed out on promotion to the top flight in 1950 by just 0.06 of a goal, but finally reached the First Division under Ted Bates in 1966. Bates’ team qualified for Europe twice over the subsequent years, reaching the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1970 and the UEFA Cup in 1972.
Although the Saints were relegated in 1974, they quickly began to rebuild and shocked football fans by beating favourites Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final. The success led to a third spell in Europe and the team was promoted two years later. Southampton continued to progress rapidly and developed an attacking team that was entertaining to watch. The Saints reached the League Cup final in 1979 and finishing as runners-up of the First Division in 1984 - just three points behind winners Liverpool. Southampton remained a top flight team for twenty-seven years and the popular club was a founder member of the Premiership in 1992.
Did you know…
Southampton FC was originally called St. Mary’s Y.M.A, which led to the current nickname of “The Saints". The club played at The Dell Stadium for over one hundred years, but they relocated to St. Mary’s Stadium in 2001, which has twice the capacity (32,689 spectators). Supporters were delighted with the move, as it was seen as Southampton FC ‘coming home’. The new ground was built on a disused gas work site in the heart of the city and close to St. Mary’s church where the club was founded. Although the ground was originally intended to be named “The Friends Provident Stadium", in reference to the sponsors, fans campaigned against this move and overturned the idea. When built, the ground was the largest southern stadium outside of London. It has since been given a four star rating by UEFA.
