Brief History of Millwall FC
Millwall FC was formed in 1885 by workers of JT Morton’s Factory, which supplied a variety of food goods to sailing ships. The factory was located on the Isle of Dogs in East London, but the business had originated in Aberdeen. A large Scottish presence therefore existed in early Millwall teams and this led the club to play in blue and white. The Lions were founder members of the Southern League in 1894 and reached three FA Cup semi-finals by the late 1930s. The 1937 semi-final was particularly significant, as Millwall became the first Third Division side to reach this stage of the competition. Millwall almost reached the top division in 1971. A great side had formed at the club – which fans now refer to as “The Class of ‘71"– and they missed out on promotion by just one point. The Lions were promoted to the top flight for the first time in 1988, as the club won the Second Division Championship. Millwall celebrated further success in 2004, reaching the FA Cup final for the first time. Although Millwall eventually lost the final 3-0 to Manchester United, the club qualified for a place in the UEFA Cup, as Manchester United had already qualified for the Champions League.
Did you know...
Millwall FC was originally nicknamed “The Dockers"as this was the profession of the majority of their fans. Millwall was the only football club in the country that was regularly allowed to move kick-off to 3.15pm. This dispensation was made to give supporters enough time to finish their shifts and get to the games. The club’s nickname changed to “The Lions"following the FA Cup run of 1900, during which the fans roared the team on as they beat Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa to reach the semi-final. Millwall adopted the motto: “We Fear No Foe Where E’er We Go"and a lion later became the club’s emblem.
The Lions played in a variety of stadia on the Isle of Dogs during the early days, before moving to New Cross in 1910 and settling at The Den. Renowned architect Archibald Leitch built the ground at a cost of £10,000 and the inaugural match was played against Brighton & Hove Albion in October. The Den was famous for its intimidating atmosphere and many suggested it gave Millwall a goal advantage before the sides even entered the pitch. Speaking of The Den, Eamon Dunphy once said, “The away-team dressing room is like a dungeon, no light, no window…Then you get out there to face them. And they just come storming straight at you. Most teams just jack it in."
Millwall moved to The New Den in 1993. The stadium is located in Bermondsey, just a quarter of a mile from the old ground. It has a capacity of 20,146 supporters and has been chosen as the site for many television programmes, such as Dream Team and The Bill.
