Brief History of Leicester City FC
Leicester City FC was formed in 1884 by members of a Bible class at Old Emmanuel Church. The club was originally called Leicester Fosse Football Club, as the team initially played at a private field near Fosse Street. The club became Leicester City FC in 1919. The Foxes were promoted to the top flight as (old style) Second Division Champions six times during the twentieth century. They enjoyed their highest ever placing in the First Division in 1929, when the team finished runners-up to Sheffield Wednesday by just one point. Martin O’Neill became manager of the club in 1995 and he led the Foxes through their most successful era to date. Leicester City won the League Cup twice, in 1997 and 2000, finished in a top ten position in the Premiership for four consecutive seasons and twice qualified for the UEFA Cup.
Did you know…
Leicester City FC is also known as “The Foxes". This is because there is a longstanding fox hunting tradition in Leicestershire. The outline of the county on a map is even said to resemble a fox’s head! A fox was first included on the club badge in 1948 and a team mascot called “Filbert Fox" was later introduced to the Leicester City supporters. Filbert Fox attends every home match.
Leicester City has played at many grounds and the club moved to Walkers Stadium in 2002. The ground has an all-seated capacity of 32,500 and the inaugural match was a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao. Jordon Stewart scored for the Foxes during the game and thus became the first Leicester City player to score at Walkers Stadium. The ground has also hosted international football fixtures and has held European Rugby matches on behalf of the Leicester Tigers.
