Brief History of Dundee United FC
Dundee United FC was formed in the early 1900s by the Irish Catholic community that had gathered in the city. The club reached the First Division in 1925, but was almost forced to fold in the 1930s due to the recession. Luckily the Terrors survived and they have gone on to become one of the most successful clubs in Scottish football. Dundee United has won every domestic honour, including the Scottish Premier League title, and the team became particularly famous for their entertaining cup runs in Europe. The club beat Barcelona and Juventus during their first European campaign in 1966. The Terrors also enjoyed a series of exciting continental fixtures during the 1980s. The highlight of the decade came in 1987, when Dundee United beat FC Barcelona once again to reach the UEFA Cup final. No other British side has remained unbeaten against the Catalan team in four matches.
Did you know…
Dundee United’s official nickname is “The Terrors", but the source of this name is unclear. Many believe it arose due to the incredible 4-3 win over Celtic in the 1949 Scottish Cup. United was a mid-table team in the Second Division at the time, so they went into the tie as underdogs. Their job was made even more difficult when three perfectly legitimate goals were disallowed. However, the side showed remarkable spirit and twice came back from a goal behind to win the game. “The Terrors of Tannadice" was recorded by Hector Nichol in 1963 and it was subsequently played at the beginning of every match.
Whilst the team is known as “The Terrors", the Dundee United fans are nicknamed “The Arabs". This follows the harsh winter of 1963. United hired a tar-burner to melt ice on the pitch and thus prevent a Scottish Cup tie from being cancelled. The plan almost backfired however, as the burner destroyed most of the grass. Large amounts of sand were used on the surface and the referee surprisingly allowed the game to go ahead. United eventually won the tie comfortably, causing fans to declare their team had taken to the sandy pitch ‘like Arabs’.
Dundee United has played at Tannadice Park stadium since the formation of the club. The ground has a capacity of 14,209 supporters and it has also held greyhound racing and boxing. Tannadice Park is situated just 170 yards away from Dens Park, home of rivals Dundee FC. No two football grounds are located closer to each other in the United Kingdom.
