Brief History of Derby County FC
Derby County FC formed in 1884 as a means of keeping the local cricket team fit during the winter. The club became a founder member of the Football League in 1888 and has since gone on to win the FA Cup and each of the top three division titles. Derby County began its golden era when Brian Clough took over as manager of the club in 1967. Clough quickly signed Dave Mackay, who became a key player for the Rams both on the field and in the dressing room. Derby County subsequently won promotion to the top flight in 1969, won the title in 1972 and reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1973. Clough had often courted controversy and his outspoken nature soon led to his departure. Mackay returned to the club as the Ram’s new manager and he led Derby County to a second First Division title in 1975. Although the team’s form declined and they faced a disappointing period outside the top flight, the Rams fought back to the top, securing promotion to the Premiership in 2007. Fans were given another reason to cheer two years later, as the Clough dynasty continued at the club. Brian Clough’s son Nigel was appointed manager of the Rams in January 2009.
Did you know…
Derby County is nicknamed “The Rams" in reference to the symbol of the city and the local folksong, ‘The Derby Ram’. Supporters of the club are known for their loyalty and rivals include Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and more recently, Leeds United. A rivalry with Leeds emerged during the 1970s, when the two teams were the top sides in England and managers Brian Clough and Don Revie shared an openly hostile relationship.
Derby County FC originally played football at the Racecourse Ground, where the team had previously played cricket. The Rams moved to the Baseball Ground in 1895 and stayed there for over a century. The stadium had initially held 40,000 spectators, but capacity was cut down to 18,300 following the Taylor Report’s ruling that grounds should be all-seated. The club had hoped to rebuild the Baseball Ground with a higher capacity, but instead moved to a purpose built stadium at Pride Park in 1997.
