Brief History of Burnley FC
Burnley FC began as a rugby team, but switched to football in 1882 and became founder members of the Football League in 1888. The club was relegated in 1897 and promotion in 1913 coincided with a run to the FA Cup semi-final. Although the Clarets lost to Sunderland, the team won the FA Cup in the following season, beating Liverpool 1-0. Success continued for Burnley after the War; the club became First Division champions in 1921 with an incredible thirty match unbeaten streak.
The Clarets reached their second FA Cup final in 1946 and had become one of the most feared sides in the country by the beginning of the 1960s. Burnley won a second top flight title at the start of the decade and reached the quarter-final of the European Cup in 1961. After consistently finishing near the top of the league, the Clarets’ form began to falter and they were finally relegated in 1971. Although Burnley would briefly return to the top division, results continued to be inconsistent and the club fell down to the Fourth Division in 1985. The Clarets have since re-built, reaching the Championship by the turn of the century, and finally clinching promotion to the Premiership in 2009. The club also punched above their weight in some terrific FA Cup runs.
Did you know...
Burnley FC is nicknamed "The Clarets" due to the main colour of their home strip. The club had tried a variety of colours in the early years, but changed to claret and sky blue in 1910. Aston Villa had recently won the First Division and Burnley hoped that a similar kit would yield similar results.
Home games have been played at Turf Moor since 1883 and the stadium has a capacity of over 22,000 people. It is the second oldest ground in the United Kingdom, behind Preston North End’s Deepdale. The ground has held international fixtures and plans for a redevelopment were announced in 2007.
