Brief History of Bradford City FC
Bradford City FC was founded in 1903 by the sub-editor of the “Bradford Observer", James Whyte. The team was immediately elected into the Second Division, in place of Doncaster Rovers, despite never having taken part in a professional match. The Bantams developed quickly and earned promotion to the top flight in 1908. Success continued for Bradford City as the club went on to win the FA Cup in 1911. They were the first side to lift the new trophy after the original prize had been lost and by coincidence, the new trophy had been made in Bradford. The club was relegated with Manchester United in 1922, but Bradford City returned to the top flight after seventy-seven years, in 1999. The club silenced critics by avoiding relegation in the following season.
Did you know…
Bradford City FC has been given many nicknames over the years. In the early days, the club was known as “The Wasps" or “The Robins", in reference to the colours of the team strip, and the side was also often called “The Citizens" or “The Paraders". The most common nickname associated with Bradford City is “The Bantams", which is in reference to the bantam that appears on the club emblem.
Home games have been played at the Valley Parade stadium since the football club was first formed in 1903. The ground has also hosted various rugby teams and England youth fixtures and it underwent a £2.6 million redevelopment following a serious fire on 11th May 1985. The fire developed in the Main Stand during Bradford City’s final game of the season, which was played against Lincoln City. The flames spread quickly and the tragic blaze killed fifty-six fans. Memorials have since been erected at Bradford City Hall and at the stadium itself. The incident also prompted new safety legislation, following an inquiry.
