Mothers were traditionally given the job of making the Christmas dinner during the festive season. Most Xmas food is full of seasonal ritual and folklore, and perhaps none more-so than the Christmas pudding. The Christmas pudding is always mixed from East to West in honour of the journey taken by the Three Wise Men. In medieval times, a bean was hidden in the fruit pudding and whoever found it became King for the night. It then became traditional to hide a coin in the Xmas pudding, which was thought to bring the person who found it wealth and prosperity.
Another Xmas food favourite is the mince pie. Some believe that eating one mince pie on each of the twelve days of Christmas will bring you luck in each of the twelve months of the year. Oliver Cromwell banned mince pies in the Seventeenth Century, as he wanted to abolish gluttony over the festive period. The law against mince pies was never lifted and so it is actually still technically illegal to eat a mince pie in England on Christmas day.
