Watford Personalised Football Diary

Wonderful Diary Gifts for Fans of Watford FC!

Watford FC was founded in 1881 under the name Watford Rovers. In 1960, the Hornets began to advance in the professional leagues. The club reached the Second Division in 1969, but would fall back down to the lowest tier of English football in the following years. In 1976, Sir Elton John became chairman of Watford FC and invested large sums of money in the club. The musician had been a lifelong fan of the Hornets and he would go on to combine effectively with new manager, Graham Taylor. Watford reached the First Division in 1982 and the team remarkably finished their first top flight season in second place.

Sir Elton John and Graham Taylor stepped down from their respective positions in the late eighties. Both returned in 1997, leading to a second period of success for the Hornets. Watford FC has since endured mixed form, but the club appointed promising young manager Brendon Rogers in 2008, leading to much hope for the future.

Our Personalised Watford Diaries feature twelve reproduced match reports on some of the best games and results since 1960. Starting from the month of your choice, these A5 Diaries are a terrific gift idea for fans of the Hornets.

Diary Highlights

The Personalised Watford Diary begins in 1960 when the club beatSouthampton 1-0 in the fourth round replay of the FA Cup. Ten years later, a Barry Endean header was enough to knock Liverpool out of the same competition at the quarter-final stage. Watford FC had been promoted to the Second Division in the previous season and this had created momentum for the Hornets. The 1-0 win against the Reds had still been above everybody’s expectations and reaching the FA Cup semi-final remains one of the biggest highlights in the history of the club.

Watford made the semi-finals of the League Cup in 1978 and this cup run included a terrific 1-2 win against Manchester United in the fourth round. Luther Blissett scored two goals, as the Hornets came from behind at Old Trafford to shock the Red Devils. Watford FC reached the League Cup semi-final again in 2004, beating Portsmouth 3-0 in the quarters. Our Watford Diary Gift also includes stunning League Cup victories against Southampton and Leeds United from 1980 and 1992 respectively, in addition to the Hornets’ 3-0 win against Kaiserslautern in the 1983 UEFA Cup campaign. This match was the second leg in Watford FC’s first ever European tie.

Moving to league competition, the A5 Diary features key games from two promotion seasons. In 1999, Graham Taylor guided the Hornets to the Premiership via the play-offs. Watford beat Bolton 2-0 in the final to capture a second successive promotion and one of the highlights of this match was a fantastic goal by Nicky Wright, scored with an overhead kick. The Hornets were also promoted to the top flight in 2006. Our Personalised Diary features games against Crystal Palace and Leeds United from the Championship play-off finals.
