Sheffield Wednesday Personalised Football Diary

Terrific Diary Gifts for Fans of the Owls!

Sheffield Wednesday FC is the only league football club to include a day of the week in its name. The Owls were originally a cricket team called ‘The Wednesday Cricket Club’. They used this name because local craftsmen did not have to work on a Wednesday afternoon and used this time to play in local cricket matches. In 1867, John Pashley called a meeting - also on Wednesday - to propose that the club should play football in the winter months to keep the cricket team together. Football became instantly popular and it soon began to provide the majority of the club’s income. In 1882 the club split into two distinctive sports and five years later, ’The Wednesday Football Club’ turned professional.

Robert Brown became manager in 1929 and changed the name of the club to Sheffield Wednesday FC. By this stage, the Owls had won the First Division three times and claimed two FA Cups. Although success has since slowed down, Sheffield Wednesday has spent most of its time in the top flight and the club is one of the best supported teams in the leagues.

Our Personalised Sheffield Wednesday Diaries feature twelve fantastic match reports from our newspaper archives, covering a special selection of games from the past hundred years. Starting from the month of your choice, these A5 Diaries are a great gift idea for any fan of the Owls.

Diary Highlights

The Personalised Sheffield Wednesday FC Diaries begin with the 6-3 win against Derby County in 1930, which clinched the Owl’s fourth First Division title. The club was in the middle of a great run of success and between 1928 and 1936, the team only finished outside of the top three on one occasion. In 1935, Sheffield Wednesday achieved domestic cup success, beating West Bromwich 4-2 in the FA Cup Final. The match had been a close affair, but when the Baggies missed a clear chance at 2-2, the Owls took advantage. The club faced a quiet spell over the next few years, but Sheffield Wednesday again reached an FA Cup final in 1966, following a campaign full of away ties. Although the Owls raced to a 2-0 lead against Everton, a lapse in concentration eventually lead to a 2-3 loss.

Ron Atkinson became the manager of Sheffield Wednesday in 1989. The A5 Diary features an article on his appointment and some key games from his time at the club. Although the Owls were relegated at the end of Atkinson’s first season, the team were promoted the following year and had begun to play great football. In 1991 the Owls won the League Cup - their first trophy for over fifty years - beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final. Two years later, Sheffield Wednesday began another enthralling run, this time in the FA Cup. The Owls beat local rivals Sheffield United 2-1 in the semi-final, before drawing with Arsenal in the final. The replay was an exciting match and although Sheffield Wednesday would ultimately lose, a fantastic performance forced the Gunners into extra-time.

The most recent match report included in our Sheffield Wednesday Diary Gift is the 4-2 victory against Hartlepool FC in the 2005 League One play-off final. The Owls took over 40,000 fans to the Millennium Stadium and the extra-time win provoked fantastic scenes of celebration.
