Personalised Football Diary - Chelsea
Unique Diary Gift For Fans Of The Blues!
Chelsea FC, owned since 2003 by Russian millionaire Roman Abramovich, has become one of the biggest clubs in world football. The team had faced financial ruin in the 1980s, but Abramovich helped to make this period of gloom a distant memory, pumping a staggering £100 million into the Blues. The hiring of charismatic yet controversial manager Jose Mourinho was to prove a masterstroke, as he used the riches wisely and soon led Chelsea to the top of the Premiership; making the Blues almost unbeatable in the process. With Premier League titles, cup wins and regular places in the latter rounds of the Champions League - the Blues became a force to be reckoned with.
Chelsea’s proud history did not just start with Roman revolution however, as there had already been many successful years of football and a long tradition of glamorous signings at the club. Our Personalised Newspaper Diary is a unique gift idea that reminisces upon Chelsea's earlier years and also celebrates more recent triumphs. Using reproduced match reports from our newspaper archives, Chelsea fans will be fascinated every single month with reports on the wonderful wins that their club has enjoyed.
Diary Highlights
These Personalised Newspaper Diaries begin in 1909, when crowds were already flocking to see Chelsea play. Excitement grew around the club through the 1930s, and in 1935 over 82,000 fans turned out to watch Chelsea take on multi-championship winning Arsenal. The match would end in a 1-1 draw, but the attendance remains a record for English league football. Chelsea supporters were finally rewarded with success in the 1950’s, as Ted Drake took charge of the club and quickly used his knowledge of lower divisions to bring in players with hunger and determination. In 1955, on the Blues’ 50th Anniversary, Chelsea won the First Division.
Success for Chelsea FC would next come through cup competition. Your A5 Diary skips to 1965, when the Blues faced Leicester City in the League Cup final. After winning the first leg 3-2, Tommy Docherty’s Chelsea drew the vital second match 0-0 to win the competition. It was a big boost to the Blues, as league form had begun to stutter. After finding themselves back in the Second Division, Eddie McCeadie led the team to promotion in 1977, before financial problems and managerial instability forced Chelsea back down again. It was not the league that Chelsea had wanted to find themselves in, but the club became Second Division Champions twice in the 1980s and both of these league-winning matches are featured in this nostalgic Diary of Chelsea headlines.
Highlights included in the Football Diary from more recent years include two terrific FA Cup triumphs, against Middlesbrough in 1997 and then Manchester United in 2007. The 2-0 win against Middlesbrough would end twenty-six years for the Blues without a top flight trophy and Di Matteo got the match off to a storming start with a goal after just forty-three seconds. Chelsea had to wait until extra time for a breakthrough against Manchester United ten years later, but the eventual 1-0 win would be sweet revenge for the club, as the Red Devils had beaten Chelsea to the Premiership title in the same year.
